James Baker III is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 61st United States Secretary of State from 1989 to 1992 under President George H. W. Bush. He also served as White House Chief of Staff from 1981 to 1985 and as the United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1985 to 1988. Baker was born in Houston, Texas, on April 28, 1930. He attended The Hill School, a boarding school in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and then Princeton University, where he graduated with an A.B. in 1952. He then attended the University of Texas School of Law, where he earned his LL.B. in 1957. Baker began his career in law, working as an associate at Andrews & Kurth in Houston from 1957 to 1975. He then served as Undersecretary of Commerce for President Gerald Ford from 1975 to 1976. He was then appointed White House Chief of Staff by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, a position he held until 1985. In 1985, President Reagan appointed Baker as the United States Secretary of the Treasury, a position he held until 1988. He then served as the United States Secretary of State from 1989 to 1992 under President George H. W. Bush. Baker is currently a senior partner at the law firm of Baker Botts in Houston, Texas. He is also a member of the board of directors of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University.
